Home / What insurers look for / Windows and doors

Do my windows and doors matter for insurance?
Yes, for the state and FAIR Plan lists and for IBHS Enhanced. Multi-paned windows or working shutters are on the state and FAIR Plan lists. IBHS Essential does not set window or door rules.
The state Zone 0 rule is not law yet. Insurers and IBHS already use their own lists.
What to check
Count your windows. Note any single pane glass.
Check whether your shutters work and what they are made of.
Look at your exterior doors and glass in doors.
Ask your insurer which of these it counts.
What each list says
The lists do not always agree. Here is what each one says about this.
- State discount list
Double pane windows or added shutters.
- FAIR Plan
Upgraded multi-paned windows or functional shutters.
- IBHS Enhanced
Windows, skylights and glass in doors use at least two tempered panes, glass with a 20-minute fire rating, or glass block (windows only). Doors are noncombustible, or solid-core wood at least 1-3/4 inches thick with a noncombustible threshold, or rated for 20 minutes. A combustible door is allowed behind a noncombustible storm door (sections 3.1.5 and 3.1.6).
- State draft
Only about plants: none within 2 feet of windows and doors.
